Traveling through nearby Columbia Heights where traffic is crawling, road construction is sprawling and every other truck is pouring concrete reminds us of Pete Seeger’s Cement Octopus.
There’s a cement octopus sits in Sacramento Columbia Heights I think,
Gets red tape to eat, gasoline taxes to drink,
And it grows by day and it grows by night
And it rolls over everything in sight.
Oh, stand by me and protect that tree
From the freeway DC misery.
Someday the construction will finish and the cement octopus will go away leaving wide swaths of impermeable pavement in its wake – and a few token trees.
