After a recent segment on WAMU, we had visions of a small chicken coop out back with a few buff orpingtons laying fresh eggs.

“Officials in the mayor’s office said there is currently no law prohibiting raising chickens within city limits if residents follow guidelines on proper animal care and shelter.”

But alas, the chicken coop will not be built here on Monroe St. According to the DC code DC ST § 8-1808 (h)(1), keeping any living member of the animal kingdom save those typically considered pets is not permitted.

Although not allowed in DC, raising chickens is permitted in other major urban and suburban areas (including Manhattan).  And here is a good resource for getting started with your back yard biddies.
