We will soon be doubling our tree canopy when we plant our second tree. After extensive research and consultation, we have decided on an Amelanchier (also known as a serviceberry or juneberry).

Runners up were Kousa dogwood and Malus prairie fire. All good understory trees that would grow well in our urban environment.

Amelanchier, a member of the rosaceae (rose) family, is a native tree with white fragrant blossoms followed by small edible fruit. Over 40 species of birds including some of our favorites – goldfinches, cardinals, tufted titmice, chickadees – and nearly as many mammal species enjoy the serviceberry berry!
