When was the first seed catalog published in the US? If you guessed 1784, you would be right.

David Landreth established the first mail order seed catalog (D. Landreth Seed Company) in January of 1784, a company which is still in existence today.

David and his son also founded the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, probably best known for putting on the Philadelphia Flower Show.

A great article on the history of mail order seeds in the US can be found here, and the Smithsonian’s History of the American Seed and Nursery Industry and Their Trade Catalogs is here.

Finally, your tax dollars at work help support USDA’s Henry G. Gilbert Nursery and Seed Trade Catalog Collection
