Enjoyable urban foraging tour today with Wildman Steve Brill discovering edible plants growing along the sidewalks of Mt Pleasant.
Yellow woodsorrel, a weed tangy tender green growing rampant in my yard, will be a nice addition to a summer salad. Dandelion flowers petals, wild mustard seeds and young plantain leaves are all nutritious and easy to find in most any urban landscape.
At the end of the tour we had a tasty treat from Pleasant Pops - a pop made from foraged wineberry and mint.

Love it! I’m into collecting cattail pollen. Bet you don’t have that in Mt.P!

Nope, no cattails here. What do you do with the pollen?

God, those pops were good.
We don’t have to go too far from Mt. P for the cattails — Roosevelt Island? Kenilworth? The pollen is a good source of protein but what I love is cooking the immature seedheads like a green vegetable.
For foraging walks with a DC local try Matt’s Habitats.

Thanks – now I know where to look locally for cattails!
And yes, loved the pops!
